Striving for Balance

By: Lisa Wilson-Foley

BALANCE is a word that we, as therapists, use a lot in our work life. We are always trying to improve someone’s standing balance to help with transfers or for ambulation. We understand that better balance in our patient population reduces the chance of falls.

In our home lives we are often trying to balance the checkbook. We want to make sure that we have the financial resources to cover our expenses. Of course, balancing ones checkbook isn't always an easy thing to do, especially around the holidays when it always seems like there is more money going out than coming in. It is an ongoing battle.

A few months ago, I read a book called “Eat, Pray and Love”. In the book the author described a concept in which every city in the world has one word that reverberates through the minds of the residents of that city. For instance, it noted that New York City residents always think in terms of Succeed! Succeed! And the citizens in Rome walk around thinking Sex! Sex! Sex! This concept left me wondering about what words or thoughts reverberate through my own head or that of my staff. During a strategic planning session AllStar had with some of the management staff a few months ago, I put the question out there. “What words or phrases seem to run through the heads of my management team?” Although the actual terminology might have differed, the over-riding theme was BALANCE! BALANCE! BALANCE! Striving for work and life balance is important to the AllStar management team and after discussing it further we realized that it probably is important to most of the AllStar therapists as well. As a result, the new company theme or tag line, which will become a part of our logo, will be “Striving for Balance”.

I know firsthand how hard the balancing act can be, especially for care-givers who are also part of the sandwich generation and typically very involved with the extended family dynamics. I also know that the holiday season can be one of the most stressful times for some people. So, I say to all of you - I want you to have balance in your lives and that we, as a team, care about your day-to-day struggles to achieve that balance.Take this time to appreciate your lives, let the little things go and know that what you do is valued and impacts many people’s lives in a very positive way. Striving for Balance is a goal. However, balance is not static, what works for one may not work for another, balance may be accomplished for a short time but is an ongoing effort. Like a seesaw, life can have its thrills in the ups and downs, but we achieve a measure of satisfaction when we can just rest for a moment in the middle. I sincerely wish you all a Happy Holiday Season...and some time for middle ground!
